Shenzhen, China, August 20, 2012: Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, signed a sponsorship agreement with Atlético de Madrid football club that will place the Huawei logo on the front of the team’s famed red and white kit for three matches – their La Liga opener at Levante on August 19, their home opening game against Athletic Bilbao on August 27, as well as at the UEFA Super Cup, which will be played in Monaco on August 31 against Chelsea.
This marks the second time in 2012 that Huawei has sponsored Atlético de Madrid, following the company’s one-match sponsorship during last season’s match against Real Madrid on April 11 at the Vicente Calderón Stadium. That initial partnership proved to be fruitful for both Huawei and Atlético de Madrid, leading Huawei to further demonstrate its commitment to the Spanish, European, and global markets by teaming up once again with the reigning UEFA Europa League champions.
“Our collaboration with Club Atlético de Madrid makes clear our commitment to the Spanish, European, and global markets, as well as our firm support of a club with over 100 years of history, a long record of sporting achievement, and a markedly international character,” said Shao Yang, CMO of Huawei Device. “Our goal is to reach a global audience, and we believe that this partnership with Atlético de Madrid offers an ideal platform to raise awareness of our brand among a very important group of our target audience – consumers in Europe.”
Miguel Ángel Gil, CEO of the Club Atlético de Madrid, said, “This sponsorship agreement with the largest telecommunications company in the world demonstrates that we are at the forefront of football worldwide, not only with regard to sportive results, but also with regard to our business plan. I am very pleased with this new step forward we have taken together with Huawei, and I am convinced that our partnership will develop and prosper in the coming years.”
This partnership is the latest in Huawei Device’s efforts to build its brand and promote its products to consumers across Europe and globally. Among Huawei Device’s flagship products is the Ascend P1, a super-slim smartphone that delivers outstanding speed, power and functionality. The Ascend P1 is currently on sale in China, Germany, Poland, Norway, South Africa, and Australia, with other markets to follow.
Huawei’s previous sponsorships include the partnership with Eurosport in July 2012 for the coverage of summer’s biggest sporting events, and the sponsorship of the 2011 Italian Super Cup between Inter Milan and AC Milan held at the Birds Nest Stadium in Beijing.
The 2012 UEFA Super Cup match against Chelsea will be broadcast throughout Europe, the UK, the Middle East, Africa, Japan, China, the USA, and South America.
